First, start by dicing the onion and mincing the garlic clove.
Add the oil to a pan over medium heat.
Saute the onion and garlic clove just until fragrant and add the sweet Italian sausage to the pan. Cook the sausage until browned using a meat chopper or wooden spoon to break it up. Spray the inside of the crockpot with non stick cooking spray. Slice the butter into small cubes and chop the apple.
Add the stuffing mix, Italian sausage, chopped apple, butter slices, chicken broth, poultry seasoning, salt and pepper to the crockpot. Give it all a good mix to combine. Insert a double layer of paper towels under the lid to catch condensation and close. Cook on low for 2 – 2.5 hours.
Fluff the stuffing with a fork and serve.
- Sweet, crisp apples tend to work well for this recipe. I used ginger gold apples because they have a mild, sweet taste and that’s what I had on hand. Granny Smith apples are too tart for this recipe, in my opinion. However, Braeburn or Gala apples are my favorite if you can find them.
- A 4 or 6 qt slow cooker works well for this recipe. If you’re using anything larger, you may need to either reduce the cooking time or double the recipe.
- This recipe is best when cooked on low. Cooking it on high may result in it burning very quickly on the bottom.
- Cooking times may vary depending on your slow cooker’s brand so check on it throughout the cooking process to make sure the bottom doesn’t burn.
