Making The Perfect Hot Dogs
Once you try a Brazilian hot dog, you will never want a regular hot dog again. An average hot dog is usually made with ketchup and maybe a little mustard, but this hot dog recipe has way more flavor! A Brazilian hot dog is made with a delicious tomato sauce or “molho de tomato” that is made with onions, garlic, green pepper and a few spices.
Toppings Are Important
The hot dogs are served with optional toppings that consist of corn, peas, shoestring potato sticks (batata palha), parmesan cheese, ketchup, mustard, mayonnaise and even pimenta malagueta for a kick. Of course these toppings are optional and you can top off your “cachorro quente Brasileiro” with whatever toppings you enjoy. And let me tell you, this recipe is my mother’s and she is an amazing cook! Of course she has been cooking since before I was born. So when I needed a really good traditional Brazilian hot dog recipe, I had to consult with her!
These are all the ingredients you will be needing to make the tomato sauce.
I’m using good quality hot dogs buns. Choose strong buns like these to hold in all those delicious toppings.

Here are the toppings we are using for our delicious Brazilian hot dogs.
How To Make Brazilian Hot Dogs
- First, start by chopping and dicing the green pepper, onion and mincing the garlic cloves.
- Make a length wise cut down the center of each of your hot dogs. Do not cut through them or slice them completely.
- Add butter to a sauce pan over medium high heat.
- Once the butter has melted, add the green peppers and onions. Saute until the onions become translucent.
- Add the garlic and saute for about 30 seconds.
- Pour in the tomato sauce and water. Give everything a quick stir.
- Once the tomato sauce begins to boil, lower the heat to medium low, cover and simmer for 30 minutes. Stir the tomato sauce occasionally.
- Once the tomato sauce has been simmering for 23 minutes, add the hot dogs. Cover and continue to cook for the next 7 minutes, stirring occasionally.
- It’s time to build your Brazilian hot dogs! Place a hot dog inside a bun and add more tomato sauce on top.
- Add the additional toppings to your “cachorro quente Brasileiro” such as peas, corn, parmesan cheese, shoestring potato sticks (batata palha), ketchup, mustard, mayonnaise and even some hot sauce or pimenta malagueta if you’d like.
- Top the hot dogs with parsley for garnishing, if desired, and enjoy!
Storing Suggestions
Store these Brazilian hot dogs in an air tight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days. You can also freeze the tomato sauce with the hot dogs in an air tight container for up to 90 days. You can either reheat the hot dogs in the microwave or on the stove top over medium low heat until completely heated through.
Tips & Variations
- Make sure to use good quality hot dogs for this recipe. I highly recommend these Nathan’s skinless beef franks.
- It’s important to stir the tomato sauce occasionally as it is simmering so you do not burn the bottom.
- Check the tomato sauce for salt before adding the hot dogs. If you think it needs more salt, add more according to taste.
- Add 1/2 tsp of crushed red pepper to the tomato sauce if you want a little kick. We usually serve these Brazilian hot dogs at birthday parties and since kids don’t really enjoy spicy food, we just serve some hot sauce or pimenta malagueta on the side for whoever likes the kick.
