Let’s Talk About The Ingredients

  • Onions – Cut the onions and separate the rings from each other.
  • KFC Spice Blend – Make your own KFC seasoning right at home.
  • Flour and Baking Soda – Whisk together the flour, baking soda and seasonings.
  • Buttermilk and Egg – Combine the buttermilk and egg to make the batter.
  • Breadcrumbs – Panko breadcrumbs work well for this recipe.
  • Oil – Heat the oil while you prepare the buttermilk batter for the onion rings.
Prepare the onion rings by slicing them then dipping in the seasoned flour first. Mix together the buttermilk batter with the flour mixture then dip the onions in before dipping in the Panko Bread Crumbs and deep frying.

How To Make KFC Onion Rings

  1. Heat the oil to 365 – 370 degrees F in a pot.
  2. Cut the onions into 1/4 inch round slices and separate the rings from each other.
  3. In a bowl, whisk together the buttermilk and egg to combine.
  4. In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda and KFC seasoning.
  5. Coat the onion slices in the the flour mixture first and set aside.
  6. Combine all of the leftover flour mixture with the buttermilk and egg mixture in the same bowl. Mix until well incorporated.
  7. Pour the panko bread crumbs into a separate bowl.
  8. Dip the rings into the buttermilk batter and allow the excess to drop off.
  9. Coat the rings in Panko Bread Crumbs and transfer to the hot oil to fry. Do not over crowd.

What Kind Of Bread Crumbs Should I Use?

I used plain Panko Bread Crumbs for this recipe. You may also use seasoned bread crumbs if you prefer.

Heating The Oil

The oil should not be too hot otherwise the onion rings will burn quickly. It shouldn’t be too low in temperature either or you’ll end up with a soggy texture. The perfect oil temperature for deep fried onion rings is about 365 – 370 degrees F. Use a deep frying thermometer for accurate results. It is also important not to over crowd the pot or it will drop the oil’s temperature. I do about 3-4 onion rings at a time.

These seasoned onion rings are crispy and delicious.

Recipe Notes

  • Use a deep frying thermometer for best results.
  • Don’t over crowd the pan or the oil’s temperature will drop.
  • The onions cook quickly so keep an eye one them.
  • Sweet onions work best for this recipe.
