Add these air fryer caramelized onions to some of your favorite sandwiches or burgers. They’re much easier to make than grilled or sautéed onions but just as delicious. I love adding them to this air fryer patty melt or homemade air fried burgers. Grilled or sautéed onions can be messy to make but air frying them makes cleaning up easy, so make sure to save this recipe and give it a try.

Ingredients

  • Onions – Yellow onions or sweet, vidalia onions work well for this recipe.
  • Olive Oil – Toss the onions in olive oil making sure to coat completely.
  • Salt – I kept it simple and only used salt but you can add additional spices if you’d like.
The ingredients needed are sliced onions, olive oil and salt.

How To Make Air Fryer Caramelized Onions

  1. Preheat the air fryer to 350 degrees F for 5 minutes.
  2. Peel the onion and slice pieces into about 1/4 of an inch thick.
  3. Transfer the sliced onion into a mixing bowl and add olive oil and salt.
  4. Toss the onions to completely coat in the oil and salt mixture.
  5. Transfer to the air fryer and cook at 350 degrees F for 12-15 minutes, opening the air fryer every 4-5 minutes to shake or toss the onions so they cook evenly.
  6. Top your favorite burger or sandwich and enjoy.

What Is The Best Onion To Use For This Recipe?

This comes down to a personal preference or even what you’r serving them with. I like using yellow or sweet vidalia onions for topping sandwiches and hamburgers. However, red onions work well too if you’re going to serve them with sautéed meats like chicken or beef on the side.

Serving Suggestions

You can serve air fryer sautéed onions with almost anything. I love adding them to sandwiches and burgers but you can also top a salad like this Big Mac Salad and much more. Making air fryer caramelized onions is much easier than grilling because you can make it right at home and cleaning up is easy.

Making grilled onions in the air fryer is so easy.

Recipe Notes

  • This recipe works well with yellow onions or sweet vidalia onions.
  • Make sure to shake or toss the onions throughout the cooking process for even cooking.
  • Add additional spices according to taste. Sometimes I sprinkle some of this KFC spice blend on top of my air fried onions.
  • Cooking time may vary depending on your air fryer’s brand, adjust accordingly.
  • Always read your air fryer manual before using it.
