How To Make Caramel Buttercream Frosting
- First, start by adding the softened butter to a stand mixer or bowl if using a hand mixer. Mix the butter on medium speed until you accomplish a smooth consistency.
- Next, reduce the mixer speed to low and slowly add in the confectioner’s sugar about 1 tbsp at a time while mixing.
- Add the caramel sauce and vanilla extract and increase the mixer back to medium speed and mix until well incorporated.
- Mix for about 5-7 minutes or until you achieve a thick frosting consistency.
What Is The Best Way To Frost My Cupcakes?
The best way to frost your Twix cupcakes is by using a star tip. Cut a hole into one of the corners of a zip loc bag and place the star tip through it. The hole needs to be the right size so the star tip doesn’t fall out. Use a spatula to fill the bag with the caramel buttercream frosting and squeeze the bag to get the frosting out of the star tip and onto the cupcakes. Alternatively, If you’re not making these for a special occasion, you can just use a butter knife to spread the caramel frosting on top.
Tips & Variations
- For the caramel buttercream frosting, you’ll want to use a thick caramel sauce. I used dulce de leche which is a milk based caramel.
- Always read your air fryer manual before using it. Every brand cooks at different speeds. I recommend keeping an eye on your air fryer Twix cupcakes after the 9 minute mark. Insert a toothpick into the cupcake but don’t insert it all the way in, otherwise it will reach the Twix bar. You just want to ensure the cupcake batter at the top is done and the toothpick comes out clean.
- I strongly recommend using a cupcake or muffin pan that fits your air fryer. I tried this recipe without a cupcake pan and the Twix cupcakes did not hold their shape. Depending on the air fryer brand you own, they may also fly around in the air fryer if they’re not in a pan that can hold them.
