Ingredients
- Lemons – Freshly squeezed lemon juice is a must.
- Brown Sugar – Light brown sugar works very well for this lemonade recipe.
- Water – Use water to make the brown sugar simple syrup and add more to the pitcher.
- Ice Cubes – Serve your drink with some ice cold ice cubes.
How To Make Brown Sugar Lemonade
- First, start by making the homemade simple syrup. In a pan over medium heat, combine the brown sugar and 1 cup of water.
- Stir throughout the cooking process to dissolve all of the sugar evenly.
- When the sugar and water come to a rolling boil, reduce the heat to medium low.
- Once the sugar and water mixture has thickened and resembles syrup (this may take about 15 minutes), remove from the heat and allow it to cool. I added a few ice cubes to the simple syrup for it to cool faster.
- In a large pitcher, add lemon juice from freshly squeezed lemons, the rest of the water and the completely cooled simple syrup. Stir together to combine.
- Add ice cubes before serving and enjoy.
Can I Use Store Bought Lemon Juice?
I highly recommend squeezing fresh lemon juice to make this brown sugar lemonade recipe the best it can possibly be. However, if you can’t find lemons or you’re really pressed for time, store bought lemon juice will still get the job done.
Can I Use Dark Brown Sugar?
You certainly can use dark brown sugar if you’d like. The difference between dark brown sugar and light brown sugar is the taste. Dark brown sugar definitely packs a stronger taste so this would come down to what your preference is. I personally prefer light brown sugar to make my lemonade.
Cutting And Squeezing The Lemons
I know there are lots of lemons to cut and squeeze. I recommend cutting each lemon in half and using a citrus squeezer like this one. It works very well to catch the lemon seeds and you definitely don’t want any seeds falling inside of your lemonade. Alternatively, you can squeeze the lemons over a mesh strainer to catch the seeds as well.
Recipe Notes
- Be careful not to drop any lemon seeds into the lemonade when squeezing the lemons. I recommend using a citrus squeezer to make this process easier.
- Use freshly squeezed lemon juice to make this recipe.
- Make sure the brown sugar simple syrup has completely cooled down before adding it to the pitcher with the lemon juice.
