Let’s Talk About The Ingredients
- Bread – Stale bread works well or if you want to be fancy, use brioche bread.
- Eggs, Milk, Vanilla Extract, Ground Cinnamon and Hennessy – Combine all of these ingredients in a bowl and whisk together.
How To Make Drunken Hennessy French Toast
- First, start by cutting each slice of bread into 4 equal sized sticks.
- In a bowl, combine the milk, eggs, ground cinnamon, vanilla extract and Hennessy. Whisk the ingredients together until fully incorporated.
- Dip the sticks of bread into the egg mixture, coating all sides.
- Add butter to a pan over medium low heat.
- Once the butter has melted, place the French toast sticks in the pan to cook.
- Cook the drunken French toast for 6-8 minutes or until golden brown, flipping half way through the cooking process.
- Make the Hennessy syrup and serve immediately.
Make the Cognac Syrup
- Add water, brown sugar and white granulated sugar to a sauce pan over medium high heat. Mix frequently so that the sugar does not burn.
- Once the sugars have dissolved completely, stir in the vanilla extract and bring to a boil.
- Immediately remove from the heat upon boiling and pour in the Hennessy or cognac of choice.
- Allow the syrup to cool completely and thicken.
- Top with powdered sugar and drizzle the syrup over the French toast sticks or serve on the side for dipping.
What Kind Of Bread Should I Use
Brioche bread is my absolute favorite to use when making French toast of any kind. However, as you can see, I’m using regular sliced bread that I already had on hand for this recipe. So, really anything works.
Can I Make These Ahead?
You can certainly make these drunken French toast sticks the night before, especially during the busy holiday season. Simply prep in advance then place in an air tight container in the refrigerator. Cook immediately the next morning. I don’t recommend making it anymore than a night in advance for best results.
Storing Leftovers
Store leftover boozy French toast in the refrigerator in an air tight container, preferably lined with a paper towel to catch extra condensation. It will last for up to 5 days with this storing suggestion. Warm up once you’re ready to enjoy again.
Recipe Notes
- Any kind of sliced bread you have on hand will work. Brioche bread will certainly kick it up a notch though.
- Keep an eye on the French toast sticks when cooking and flip after the first 3-4 minutes or when the bottom is golden brown.
- Hennessy works well but other cognac brands will get the job done.
