This classic air fryer salchipapa recipe is a popular Peruvian dish that I make for my kids all the time! It’s a budget friendly meal you can make from scratch that’s great for picky eaters. We enjoy it with mayoketchup which you may either drizzle over top or serve on the side. The best part is, this salchipapas dish comes together in under 30 minutes so when you’ve got some impatient hungry kids waiting, this will get the job done. If you enjoyed these salchipapas, you will definitely love these chicharrones de pollo made in the air fryer and these easy air fryer chorizo sausages, perfect for a breakfast meal.

Ingredients

  • Potatoes – Slice russet potatoes lengthwise, dry with a paper towel and drizzle with olive oil.
  • Hot Dogs – Use a good quality brand of hot dogs, chop them up and air fry once the French fries are nearly done.
  • Olive Oil & Salt – Drizzle olive oil over the French fries and hot dogs before air frying then sprinkle a little bit of salt over them to serve.
The ingredients needed for this recipe are potatoes, hot dogs and olive oil.

Cut the hot dogs with a cross down the middle but do not cut them all the way through as seen in the photo below.

How To Make Air Fryer Salchipapa

  1. Preheat the air fryer to 400 degrees F for 5 minutes.
  2. Rinse and scrub the potatoes well. You may peel or keep the skin on like I did.
  3. Cut the potatoes lengthwise about a 1/4 of an inch thick.
  4. Dry them completely with a paper towel.
  5. Cut each hot dog into 4 equal parts. Slice each piece of hot dog down the center in a cross shape, but do not slice them all the way through. Set aside for now.
  6. Toss the potatoes in olive oil then transfer to the air fryer in one single layer. Cook at 400 degrees F for 20-23 minutes, opening to shake the basket every 5 minutes.
  7. Once the French fries are crispy, add the hot dogs and cook for an additional 3-4 minutes.
  8. Remove from the air fryer, transfer to a plate and sprinkle with salt to taste.
  9. Drizzle the salchipapas with mayoketchup or serve on the side for dipping and enjoy.

Can I Make Homemade Mayoketchup?

You sure can make mayoketchup at home by mixing together mayonnaise and ketchup then combining it with 1 minced garlic clove. However, the Peruvian sauce that typically is served with this dish is much different. It’s made by blending egg, tomatoes, oil, garlic and more. I simply buy this store bought version because I like to make this air fryer salchipapa recipe as simple as possible.

This delicious air fried salchipapas recipe is the perfect homemade meal that the kids will actually enjoy.

Recipe Notes

  • The French fries must be cooked in the air fryer in one single layer. If you over crowd the air fryer and place fries on top of each other, they will not come out as crispy as they should be.
  • Cooking times may vary depending on the air fryer brand you’re using. Once you see the French fries are getting crispy, it is time to add in the hot dogs.
  • Always read the air fryer manual before using it.
