This coleslaw recipe only needs a few ingredients. It’s probably one of the easiest recipes I have ever made because I used a bag of vegetable slaw to make it. However, you can definitely cut up your own carrots and cabbage if you really prefer coleslaw made from scratch. However, after slow cooking some pulled pork, I really appreciate an easy coleslaw recipe!
How To Make Creamy Coleslaw
- First, start by adding the coleslaw mix to a bowl. Make sure to rinse the slaw clean if it has not been thoroughly washed.
- Mix in the mayonnaise, dijon mustard, honey, apple cider vinegar and salt and pepper to taste.
- Combine all the ingredients together to fully incorporate.
- Serve over pulled pork sandwiches, fish tacos or as a side dish to any meal.
Can You Freeze Coleslaw?
I get asked this question so many times. Many people want to make coleslaw ahead of time, so they always ask me if they can freeze coleslaw. Honestly, this coleslaw recipe is mayonnaise based so it’s not great for freezing. You can replace the mayonnaise in this recipe with sour cream and freeze for up to 6 months. Sour cream thaws a lot better than mayonnaise. I do prepare the taste of the mayonnaise in my coleslaw, however the sour cream is definitely not a deal breaker. Place the coleslaw in a freezer bag making sure to remove excess air and store for up to 6 months for best results. So there you have it, you can definitely freeze coleslaw!
Tips & Variations
- If you’re planning on making your coleslaw ahead of time and freezing it, make sure to replace the mayonnaise with sour cream. This coleslaw is made with a mayonnaise based dressing and does not thaw very well.
- If you’re serving this creamy coleslaw with a mild tasting dish, I recommend mincing 1 garlic clove and adding it to the coleslaw. It will add tons of flavor to your dish.
- Add a pinch of hot sauce for a spicy coleslaw if you want to add a little kick.
